The daughter of former vice presidential candidate John Edwards learned directly, from him, of the high-profile affair that brought down his political career.
Cate Edwards told the “Today Show” she was “devastated” to learn of her father’s infidelity with Rielle Hunter, a former campaign worker with whom he had a child.
“I mean, these are my parents,” she said in the wide-ranging interview with Savannah Guthrie. “I’d grown up with a lot of love in my family, and it was hard to see them go through this.”
“There was a time I was angry with him, of course,” she added. “But we worked through it.”
Mr. Edwards, a former senator from North Carolina, was indicted in federal court in 2011 on charges he used campaign funds to cover up the affair. He was acquitted on one count, and the jury could not reach a decision on several others.
Ms. Edwards said she met Ms. Hunter a “long time ago” and was upset to see Ms. Hunter say negative things about her mother — Elizabeth Edwards, who died from breast cancer in 2010 — in a book she wrote titled, “What Really Happened.”
Ms. Edwards said she does not know if her mother ever forgave her father.
“I think she did,” she said. “I don’t know the answer to that. I think she had a mix of emotions.”
