Former Sen. Olympia Snowe: Scandals erode public's faith in government

Former Sen. Olympia Snowe, known for her efforts to work across the aisle, is calling on President Obama to show “aggressive leadership” to deal with the White House’s numerous running scandals or risk further eroding the federal government’s credibility with the American people.

“It’s serious. It goes to the heart of trust in government today. It’s bad enough as it is,” the Maine Republican said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program.

Since Friday, it’s been revealed that the Justice Department snooped on Associated Press reporters and that the Internal Revenue Service targeted conservative groups for extra scrutiny. The administration has struggled to effectively respond to both stories.

“Now they’re facing these incidents where people are victimized by the scale and powers of government and bureaucracy,” Ms. Snowe said. “Those powers should be exercised with circumspection and thoughtfulness and not to the degree we heard about today.”
