House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday that a budget conference between the House and Senate might start within days, if not immediately, after the Senate announced a deal to reopen the government and raise the debt limit.
Mrs. Pelosi, California Democrat, also praised the work of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, for shepherding the deal while standing firm against attacks on President Obama’s health care law.
“To watch him was to watch a master at work,” she told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell.
Lawmakers are hoping they do not careen into another crisis when government funding runs out again in mid-January, assuming the Senate deal gets through Congress this week. The budget conference is supposed to report its findings by mid-December in a bid to settle long-term plans without last-minute partisan wrangling.
