Joe Biden's Iowa call sparks 2016 speculation

Newly elected Iowa state Rep. Brian Meyer was watching the World Series at a local Applebee’s restaurant Wednesday when he received a phone call from none other than Vice President Joseph R. Biden, the Huffington Post reported.

Mr. Meyer told the website that it was a “pleasant surprise” to receive the phone call from Mr. Biden, which caught him off guard because he did not think many people had paid attention to his special election victory.

Asked by why he thought Mr. Biden called, Mr. Meyer said, “Well, it is Iowa.”

“I supported him in the 2008 caucuses, and I’ve always liked Joe Biden,” he said. “I don’t know why he called other than to congratulate me and wish me well.”

Mr. Meyer said he hopes that Mr. Biden will run again and that he would support him, but that there was “no discussion” of a Biden bid.

Early polls show that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is the front-runner to win the Democratic nomination in 2016, with Mr. Biden running a distant second.

The Iowa caucuses traditionally kick off the nomination process.
