Following severe summer storms and flooding, President Obama on Wednesday signed a disaster declaration for the state of Arkansas and freed up funding for six affected counties.

Federal dollars now will be available to the areas hardest hit by the early August storms: Benton, Boone, Carroll, Madison, Marion and Newton counties, according to the White House. The money can be used for emergency road work, the repair of facilities damaged by the storms and for other efforts.

Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe first requested the declaration last week to help cover the nearly $6 million in damages, most of which came to roads and bridges.

As of last week, dozens of highways and at least 100 residential roads remained closed, according to the Associated Press.

The severe weather brought as much as 15 inches of rain in less than a week to the area.
