Reps. Mike McIntyre of North Carolina and Carolyn McCarthy of New York will not seek re-election, Politico reported.
Both have served their congressional districts — Mr. McIntyre in North Carolina’s 7th and Ms. McCarthy in New York’s 4th — since 1997.
Before the announcements, the University of Virginia Center for Politics said Mr. McIntyre’s seat “leans Democratic,” but ranked among the competitive races, while Ms. McCarthy was billed as “safe Democrat.”
In statements Wednesday, President Obama lauded the service of both lawmakers.
“Carolyn McCarthy has earned a reputation for principled and compassionate leadership,” the president said. “Like many across the nation, Michelle and I admire Carolyn’s determination and personal strength.”
Of Mr. McIntyre, the president praised him for being a “strong advocate for our men and women in uniform” and also paid tribute to the congressman’s faith.
“He’s also been an active participant in the annual National Prayer Breakfast — a reflection of his deep faith,” Mr. Obama said.
