The Mystics started off the preseason on a positive note, winning their opener on the road against the New York Liberty, 60-57, on Wednesday.

Center Nicky Anosike led all scorers with 14 points, going 6 of 9 from the field, and added five rebounds.  Guard Kelly Miller, identical twin sister of former Mystic Coco Miller, scored 12 points on 4 of 7 shooting, and added five assists.

Today the Mystics play their only preseason home game, an 11:30am contest against the Chicago Sky before heading back out on the road where they will start the regular season against the Connecticut Sun on June 4.

“I think our young kids grew up a little bit in the second half and really focused on getting defensive stops and they were able to do that. That led to some easy baskets and us getting back into the game,” said coach Trudi Lacey.

“The main thing in my mind was our tenacity and not giving up, which is what I want us to be about. I felt that although at times it wasn’t pretty, we played through a lot of things. It is a work in progress, and we have a lot of new faces. It will take us a little time, but if we continue to focus on our defense and our rebounding the rest will come,” Lacey said.

The Mystics will need to narrow down to 11 players before the regular season opener, and still have 15 players on the roster. Here is today’s starting lineup:

Forward – Marissa Coleman

Forward – Crystal Langhorne

Center – Nicky Anosike

Guard – Alana Beard

Guard – Kelly Miller

Lacey and the Mystics players are operating on a fast learning curve, putting in a completely new system from last year, and are continuing to keep that curve moving forward.

“We have already talked about this past game and what we did well and what we need to continue to work on,” Lacey said.

“We have started talking about what we need to do against Chicago.”
