Nix in left, Desmond hits fifth: today's Game 1 lineup

ST. LOUIS — The Nationals are facing a right-hander in Jake Westbrook in Game 1 of today’s doubleheader against the Cardinals, and left-handed Jaime Garcia in Game 2. That allows them to change up their lineup a little bit for each game.

That is evident in the lineup for Game 1 which has Laynce Nix hitting sixth and playing left field while Michael Morse can rest for the day game and play left for the nightcap against a left-handed pitcher. The same goes for Alex Cora, who is playing third base in the day game though you can expect Jerry Hairstion Jr., who is better against left-handers, to play there tonight. Ivan Rodriguez and Wilson Ramos will do the same at the catcher position.

The only other interesting note in the lineup is that Ian Desmond is slotted fifth for the first time this season. Desmond has started only one other game in his career as the fifth batter in the lineup but he’s 4-for-8 with three RBI in his opportunities there.

Here are the full lineups for the first game today:

Nationals:

Danny Espinosa 2B
Rick Ankiel CF
Jayson Werth RF
Adam LaRoche 1B
Ian Desmond SS
Laynce Nix LF
Ivan Rodriguez C
Alex Cora 3B
John Lannan P

Cardinals:

Ryan Theriot SS
Colby Rasmus CF
Albert Pujols 1B
Matt Holliday LF
Lance Berkman RF
David Freese 3B
Gerald Laird C
Tyler Greene 2B
Jake Westbrook P
