PITTSBURGH — The Nationals optioned reliever Collin Balester back to Triple-A Syracuse following Saturday night’s game in anticipation of activating Todd Coffey from the disabled list on Sunday.

Balester, who allowed three earned runs in 3 1/3 innings of relief in the week he was with the Nationals, knew it could be a short stay when he got the call last Sunday to replace Coffey (left calf strain) on the roster and seemed to take the news in stride as he shook hands around the clubhouse.

Balester was pitching incredibly well at Triple-A prior to his call up and chances are his stay in the minor leagues won’t be extremely lengthy as long as he continues to pitch that way.
