A bit of a shuffle for the Nationals today, as shortstop Ian Desmond is on paternity leave. He’s expected to miss the next game or two, after his wife, Chelsey, gave birth to Grayson earlier today.

Alex Cora, 0-for-12 on the road trip, gets the start at shortstop. The Nationals also recalled outfielder Roger Bernadina from Triple-A Syracuse to fill Desmond’s roster spot.

Bernadina was 12-for-45 with a .340 on-base percentage and five steals over 13 games for Syracuse. He’s played in parts of three seasons with the Nationals.

“I’m just trying to maintain the swing I had in spring training,” said Bernadina, who was summoned Monday night. “There’s always room for improvement. I want to get better every day. But I’m happy with where I’m at right now.”

Manager Jim Riggleman expects to use Bernadina off the bench. But Riggleman raised the possibility Bernadina could stick with the team when Desmond returns, opening the door for another roster move. Stayed tuned.
