FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Welcome back to sunny Florida when the Nationals will open a three-game set with the Marlins this evening with Jason Marquis making his first start of the season. After a start to the 2010 season that Marquis would just as soon forget, the right-hander will likely be looking to get out of the gates better this year.

That could be difficult if his history against the Marlins is any indicator. Marquis is 5-6 with a 6.62 ERA in his career against Florida and the numbers aren’t much prettier after that. In 20 games, he’s allowed 15 home runs, the Marlins have hit .307 against him with a .383 on-base percentage.

But that’s not the half of it.

On the mound for the Marlins will be right-hander Anibal Sanchez who is 5-0 against the Nationals with a 2.28 ERA in 13 games.

Here’s how the Nationals (projected lineup only) have done in the past against Sanchez:

Jerry Hairston Jr.: 0-for-3 in 3 at-bats, 1 K

Jayson Werth: .105 AVG in 19 at-bats, 1 2B, .105 OBP, .158 SLG, 13 K

Ryan Zimmerman: .222 AVG in 36 at-bats, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 BB, .282 OBP, .250 SLG, 5 K

Adam LaRoche: .278 AVG in 18 at-bats, 1 RBI, 1 BB, .316 OBP, .278 SLG, 4 K

Michael Morse: .222 AVG in 9 at-bats, 1 2B, .222 OBP, .333 SLG, 4 K

Rick Ankiel: .600 AVG in 5 at-bats, 1 RBI, .667 OBP, .600 SLG, 1 K

Danny Espinosa: 0-for-3 in 3 at-bats, 1 K

Wilson Ramos: .333 AVG in 3 at-bats, 1 2B, 1 RBI, .333 OBP, .667 SLG

Jason Marquis: 0-for-1 in 1 at-bat

Others:

Ian Desmond: .286 AVG in 14 at-bats, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, .333 OBP, .357 SLG, 1 K

Ivan Rodriguez: .250 AVG in 8 at-bats, .250 OBP, .250 SLG, 2 K

With Jerry Hairston Jr. expected to get the start at shortstop tonight, and at leadoff, it will be interesting to see how the top of the Nationals lineup fares, especially considering Jayson Werth’s (and to some extent Ryan Zimmerman’s) ugly average vs. Sanchez to date.
