The Hagerstown Suns site made things official this evening on their site: Stephen Strasburg is on his way back.

Strasburg will make his third rehab start in recovery from Tommy John surgery back in Hagerstown, where he made his first just eight days ago. Strasburg threw 31 pitches in 1 2/3 innings of work that first day back, dazzling the capacity crowd that packed the stands to see him.

He then added to his already near-legend status when he came out for his second start in Single-A Potomac last Friday and hit 99 mph on the gun with his fastball, displayed pinpoint control and flashed all three of his pitches in a 33-pitch, three-inning outing. He then added the final 17 pitches he was scheduled to throw in the bullpen, giving him an even 50 on the day.

Wednesday, Strasburg is expected to up those totals to four innings and/or 60 pitches. He’ll do it front of a Hagerstown crowd that has already been treated to his show once and also got Bryce Harper for the first three months of the season.

Strasburg will indeed be going back a level to make his third start but there’s no need for concern. The Nationals have said from the start that Strasburg would pitch at whichever affiliate is home and convenient for him on the day he’s scheduled to throw. Hagerstown and Triple-A Syracuse were the only teams playing at home Wednesday.
