The Nationals open a three-game set with the Phillies tonight at Nationals Park against Roy Oswalt and they’ll do so without Michael Morse in the lineup.

Morse, who has started 29 of the Nationals last 30 games, gets a day off in favor of Laynce Nix at first base tonight. Jonny Gomes will get the start again in left field.


The clubhouse hasn’t opened to reporters yet so this is purely speculation, but Laynce Nix has ridiculous numbers against Oswalt: 11-for-25 with four doubles, a triple and three homers in his career. Morse’s numbers are good as well but reporters spotted Morse with some ice on his left elbow last night (where he was hit with a pitch in Chicago last week) so it may also be a chance to get him some rest and not lose too much without his bat.
