Werth returns as Nationals look to seal winning homestand

← return to Nationals Watch

After a one-day absence due to a slight groin strain, Jayson Werth is back in the Nationals lineup for the homestand finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks Thursday night. Werth insisted from the start that the issue with his groin wasn’t serious and him being back in the lineup after just one day most likely solidifies that feeling.

The Nationals began this homestand 4-2 and on a much-needed upswing if they were planning to keep their hopes of an above-.500 record alive for the season. They now look at the final game of the stand with a 5-4 record and John Lannan takes the mound tonight hoping that they can finish it with a victory and pull again within three games of that .500 mark.

This was, if all went according to plan, supposed to be a Lannan vs. Jason Marquis matchup but Marquis suffered a broken leg earlier this month and effectively ended his season. Wade Miley was called up to replace him and he’ll get the start tonight.

Here are the lineups behind Lannan and Miley:

Nationals:

Ian Desmond SS
Brian Bixler CF
Ryan Zimmerman 3B
Michael Morse 1B
Jayson Werth RF
Danny Espinosa 2B
Jonny Gomes LF
Jesus Flores C
John Lannan P

Diamondbacks:

TBA
