Strasburg will start Thursday for Double-A Harrisburg

ATLANTA — The Nationals announced this afternoon that Stephen Strasburg will make his next rehab start, as expected, Thursday, Sept. 1 for Double-A Harrisburg. If all goes according to plan, this will be Strasburg’s last stop before his return to the Nationals’ major league rotation.

If he remains on a five-day schedule, Strasburg will be scheduled to pitch in Washington on Sept. 6, against the Los Angeles Dodgers. That would also allow him to start three straight games at home, also on Sunday the 10th against the Astros and Friday the 16th against Florida. His final two starts of the season would then come on the road, but starting him on Sept. 6 would be the only way for him to have three starts at home this season.

Strasburg was perfect for five innings in his last start, his biggest challenge to date, against Triple-A Rochester. It was his longest outing as well. He was allowed to go back out for the sixth but he was pulled immediately after he allowed two straight hits, his pitch count at 64.

The Nationals have not yet announced how many innings and/or pitches Strasburg is expected to throw in what projects to be his final minor league rehab start. The minor league seasons end on Sept. 5 and, if the Nationals deemed it necessary, Strasburg could pitch for Double-A Harrisburg (which has a magic number of four to reach the playoffs) in a playoff game, but chances are that will not be necessary.
