Nationals Watch Archive: August 2011

  • One of Jordan Zimmermann's final four starts and the lineup behind him

Nationals right-hander Jordan Zimmermann is fast approaching his 160-inning limit for the 2011 season. With that in mind, Zimmermann's start tonight against the Colorado Rockies should be one of the final four he will make this year. Published August 5 2011

  • Three months after surgery, Ryan Zimmerman is finally feeling strong at the plate

Ryan Zimmerman was 3-for-4 Thursday night with two RBI and a walk, a stat line that is becoming more and more common for the Nationals third baseman who has been waiting patiently to feel like himself again at the plate. Zimmerman, who had surgery to repair a torn rectus muscle in his abdomen on May 3, returned to the active roster right on schedule six weeks later. He could play, but it would be inaccurate to say that Zimmerman was completely healthy -- that he could go about his pre and post-game workout routines in a traditional manner. • Nats react to Stairs' retirement and other pregame notes

Matt Stairs' time in a Nationals uniform was short and relatively uneventful for the 43-year-old. It was, however, his major league-record 13th organization and when the newly-retired all-time pinch-hit home run leader was interviewed on MLB Network Thursday afternoon, there was more than one captivated viewer in the Nationals clubhouse. • Pudge suffers setback, heads to Philly for second opinion

The road back to the active roster for 39-year-old catcher Ivan Rodriguez took another pit stop Thursday when he suffered a setback in his rehab from a right oblique strain. Instead of continuing his progress toward a rehab assignment -- one that could have come as early as this weekend -- Rodriguez will pack up and head to Philadelphia for a second opinion. Rodriguez will visit Dr. Bill Meyers, the same doctor who performed surgery on the torn rectus muscle in Ryan Zimmerman's abdomen earlier this season. Published August 4 2011

  • Strasburg officially set to start Sunday in Hagerstown

Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg threw a successful side session in Viera, Fla., Thursday morning and is officially on track to make his first rehab start Sunday afternoon with Single-A Hagerstown. Published August 4 2011

  • Ross Detwiler 's start and the lineups behind him

Starting a major league game is not new for Ross Detwiler. He's done it 20 times already his career. But it might be remiss to notice that this one might be different. This one might be the start of the most prolonged major league opportunity Detwiler has gotten with the Nationals. Published August 4 2011

  • Bullpen rested and ready to go, other pregame notes

Davey Johnson is trying to conserve his bullpen while he can, and Michael Morse has been on a tear along with his middle-of-the-lineup mates. Published August 3 2011

Stephen Strasburg is set to begin his rehab assignment with a start Sunday in Hagerstown Published August 3 2011

  • Notes and quotes from the Nationals 9-3 'Bombs away' victory

The Nationals delivered the "laugher" their manager had been waiting for since he took the job five weeks ago. In beating the Braves 9-3 Tuesday night, they extended a winning streak to four games, saw John Lannan bounce back from a rough start and watched their offense explode the way they've been promising it would all season. • Going with Gomes over Nix

When the Nationals lineup came out Tuesday afternoon, the first thing that stuck out to me was that right-hander Jonny Gomes was getting the start in left field over the left-handed Laynce Nix, despite the fact that the Nationals were facing a right-hander in Derek Lowe. • Strasburg's sim game and Pudge getting close to a rehab assignment

Stephen Strasburg threw 51 pitches in a three-inning simulated game Tuesday morning in Florida and while there were no reports good or bad that made their way to Davey Johnson's desk before Tuesday night's game against the Atlanta Braves, all signs point to Strasburg's next day of work coming in a minor league rehab game Published August 2 2011

  • Ankiel back at leadoff, no Nix vs. righty Lowe: today's lineups

After giving the Nationals two home runs Monday night, Rick Ankiel found himself back in the leadoff spot in the starting lineup for a second straight day -- and just seventh of his career. He'll man center while, despite facing right-hander Derek Lowe, Jonny Gomes will get the start in left. Published August 2 2011

  • As Johnson seeks comfort with bullpen, Mattheus plays integral role

It's no secret that Nationals manager Davey Johnson isn't completely comfortable with the construction of his bullpen. Johnson makes mention of that often. He'd like another long man, he'd like to not have to rely on Tyler Clippard and Drew Storen every single time there's a semi-close game, the list goes on. He'll cross one of those off the wish list this afternoon when Collin Balester officially joins the team to serve as a right-handed long man out of the bullpen and he's getting close to crossing another off the list with the continued emergence of Ryan Mattheus as one of the most reliable relievers in the Nationals bullpen. • Nationals option Severino, prepare to recall Balester

The Nationals made the first half of a move to shore up their long relief in the bullpen Monday night when they optioned Atahualpa Severino back to Triple-A Syracuse. No official announcement was made but they are expected to recall Collin Balester before Tuesday's game against the Atlanta Braves to pitch out of the bullpen as a long reliever, a right-hander to complement left-handed long man Tom Gorzelanny. • Flores' throwing vastly improved, bullpen still taking shape and other pregame notes

Sunday afternoon, while most eyes were glued to the Nationals bullpen before the 4 p.m. trade deadline to see if there was any stirring before the ninth inning from Drew Storen, Jesus Flores garnered some attention of his own. Published August 1 2011

  • Stephen Strasburg's first rehab start could be in the next 7-10 days

Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg is nearing the end of his stay in Florida and the end of a lengthy, arduous road back from Tommy John surgery. He will throw a simulated game in Florida on Tuesday and the next test for Strasburg could be on a mound at one of their affiliates. Published August 1 2011

  • Stairs released, Nats bring Harper into fold

The Nationals made two minor moves this afternoon, the first officially cutting ties with pinch hitter Matt Stairs, who'd been designated for assignment on Wednesday to clear space for Jonny Gomes and the second bringing Bryce Harper's brother Bryan into the organization. • Philly, Atlanta get tougher as Nationals turn toward future

Two of the Nationals' biggest divisional rivals bolstered their outfield this weekend. Meanwhile, the Nationals are preparing to see what some of their young pitching can do with an eye to the future. Published August 1 2011
