Good evening from Nationals Park where, yes, there's actually a baseball game. Easy to forget with the flurry of trades and rumors involving the team. Passed general manager Mike Rizzo in the tunnel outside the Nationals' clubhouse. He was pacing back and forth and, of course, on his phone. We'll try something different tonight and update this blog with trade tidbits as they filter in in advance of Sunday's 1 p.m. non-waiver trade deadline. Check back often. Published July 30 2011

The Nationals clubhouse is something of an uncertain place right now -- and not just because the team has lost five straight and nine of 12 since the All-Star break. Make no mistake, the signs of disappointment and frustration over the team's recent slide are everywhere -- along with the idea that an end to it is coming. But the knowledge that the Nationals, as they're currently constructed, may not be the same ones who come out the other side in a week is prevalent as well. Jayson Werth, for one, acknowledged that the constant trade chatter could be having an affect on the team's focus. Published July 28 2011
Nationals manager Davey Johnson returned most of his regulars to the starting lineup Thursday afternoon as the Nationals prepared for a steamy matinee with the Florida Marlins but there were still a few tweaks to that lineup. Published July 28 2011
Jonny Gomes arrived at Nationals Park early Wednesday and settled into his new locker (Matt Stairs' old locker) next to his new teammates and talked about his new team. He discussed his own stat line this season, how he feels about the potential of the Nationals organization, along with whether he'd consider re-signing here in the offseason and his feeling on becoming a six-year free agent this fall. Here's some of what Gomes had to say. Plus, Nationals manager Davey Johnson holds a team meeting. Published July 27 2011
Matt Stairs’ tenure in a Nationals uniform was brought to its unceremonious end Wednesday afternoon when the Nationals designated him for assignment and created space on their 40-man and 25-man rosters for newly acquired outfielder Jonny Gomes. Published July 27 2011
Colby Rasmus went off the board this afternoon when he was part of a reported three-team trade that sent the St. Louis outfielder to Toronto, brought Edwin Jackson from Chicago to St. Louis (via the Blue Jays) and shuffled the rosters of all three teams. It also took away one of the potential objects of the Nationals' affection at the center field position as the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline approaches Published July 27 2011
Nationals Director of Player Development Doug Harris, one of the officials quoted in a Sports Illustrated article comparing Bryce Harper to Jackie Robinson, released a statement this evening on his regret for the comparison of the Nationals phenom to someone with the legacy and impact on the game of Robinson. Nationals right-hander Cole Kimball was in the clubhouse Tuesday afternoon, his right arm in a sling, but in relatively good spirits after undergoing season-ending rotator cuff surgery over the All-Star break. Kimball is at the start of a very long recovery process -- one that he said won't see him at 100 percent until roughly the 2012 All-Star break. He will not be ready by spring training. The Nationals made their first move of the trade deadline Tuesday evening, acquiring outfielder Jonny Gomes from the Cincinnati Reds, along with cash, for Double-A Harrisburg outfielder Bill Rhinehart and Single-A Hagerstown left-hander Chris Manno. Published July 26 2011
Ian Desmond was presented with the team's Heart & Hustle award shortly before the team's game against the Florida Marlins Tuesday night, a testament to the way Desmond plays the game -- in spite of what even he termed a "sub-par" offensive season. Published July 26 2011
The Nationals return home tonight for the first game in 16 days and chances are they could not be happier to be back within the confines of a park they're 28-18 in this season. A lost road trip behind them, the Nationals turn their sights to a homestand that includes exclusively divisional opponents and starts with the Florida Marlins Published July 26 2011
The trade deadline is looming, six days away now, and with each day that brings us closer to 4 p.m. on July 31, the rumors over which players will be members of which teams come 4:01 p.m. intensify. The fact of the matter is, there are more names bandied about now as potentially being involved in a trade than would ever, ever, ever happen by Sunday. And while it's all well and good for the interest it brings to the sport, the excitement fans get in daydreaming about their team adding the perfect piece here or there and marching their way to a World Series title, it's easy to forget we're talking about human beings and not baseball cards.
