Werth second, pitcher ninth: today's lineup

Davey Johnson is returning to Washington for his first game as manager, and the Nationals are returning to a more traditional lineup.

Former manager Jim Riggleman experimented with hitting the pitcher in the eighth spot before leaving the team a few weeks ago and some wondered whether or not Johnson would continue that trend. With the Nationals back at home after an extensive road trip, he made it clear before the game that the pitcher will regularly bat ninth in his orders.

Jayson Werth was also in the midst of a Riggleman experiment before the managerial change. He spent a number of games in the leadoff spot while the team was looking for an offensive spark, but now Johnson feels that his best fit is second in the order behind Bernadina.

Here are today’s full lineups:

Nationals
Roger Bernadina CF
Jayson Werth RF
Ryan Zimmerman 3B
Laynce Nix LF
Michael Morse 1B
Danny Espinosa 2B
Wilson Ramos C
Ian Desmond SS
Tom Gorzelanny P

Pirates
Alex Presley LF
Chase d’Arnaud 3B
Andrew McCutchen CF
Matt Diaz RF
Lyle Overbay 1B
Ronny Cedeno SS
