According to a report by Andrew Baggarly, the San Francisco Giants beat reporter for the San Jose Mercury News, the Giants have officially hired former Nationals manager Jim Riggleman to be a special assignment scout.

Riggleman, who abruptly resigned as Nationals manager on June 23, has been good friends with Giants manager Bruce Bochy for several years. The two worked together with the San Diego Padres in the mid-90s and Riggleman praised Bochy on several occasions during his tenure as Nationals manager.

According to Baggarly, Giants GM Brian Sabean lauded Riggleman’s knowledge of the National League East and wealth of baseball experience.

The Giants’ interest in bringing Riggleman aboard was reported Saturday by The Washington Times. Riggleman’s agent, Burton Rocks, told the Washington Times then that nothing was final but the invitation was “basically (Bochy and Sabean) being really, really, good people and reaching out to Jim.”

Riggleman could not immediately be reached for comment.
