Bernadina bumped up, pitcher still eighth: today's lineup

Despite last night’s offensive outburst, Jim Riggleman is still searching for a winning combination at the top of the Nationals’ order. He’s sticking with Jayson Werth in the leadoff spot for the fifth consecutive game and moving Roger Bernadina to number two. Bernadina went 2-for-3 last night after Rick Ankiel left the game in the first inning with a strained intercostal muscle.

Laynce Nix and Ivan Rodriguez will start for the first time in the series, batting fourth and seventh respectively. Starting pitcher Livan Hernandez will continue the trend of pitchers batting eighth, an experiment that Riggleman said is day-to-day.

“I think where you hit them in the order is pretty insignificant,” the Washington skipper said. “We may not continue doing it much longer, who knows, but we’re just trying to do anything we can to get the offense going.”

Here are tonight’s full lineups:

Nationals:
Jayson Werth RF
Roger Bernadina CF
Ryan Zimmerman 3B
Laynce Nix LF
Michael Morse 1B
Danny Espinosa 2B
Ivan Rodriguez C
Livan Hernandez P
Ian Desmond SS

Cardinals:
Ryan Theriot SS
Colby Rasmus CF
Albert Pujols 3B
Lance Berkman 1B
Andrew Brown RF
Jon Jay LF
