Yunesky Maya has been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse after allowing six runs on nine hits in his start Tuesday. RHP Collin Balester has been called up to take his place on the Nationals roster.

Maya’s future in Washington was in doubt after last night’s outing, where he missed his mark on a number of occasions, most notably a hanging curveball that Albert Pujols deposited into the bullpen during the game’s first inning. Manager Jim Riggleman also wanted to make room in the rotation for Tom Gorzelanny, who will start on Sunday.

“It’ll actually be an extra day’s rest for him,” Riggleman said. “When he pitches he’ll get at least one really heavy bullpen session or two light ones and then be ready to go Sunday.”

Balester returns to Nationals Park after going 2-0 with one save and a 3.24 ERA with Syracuse. The 24-year-old will add another arm to a Washington bullpen that had only six available relievers on Tuesday.

Riggleman said that he will make one more move later this week when Gorzelanny is activated.
