Jayson Werth’s career as a leadoff hitter is on hold, at least for one game.

Nationals manager Jim Riggleman dropped Werth to No. 2 in the order and moved Roger Bernadina to the top spot for tpday’s game against the Mariners. Werth’s leadoff numbers weren’t good — hitting .179 with a .289 on-base percentage over 39 at-bats.

With Ryan Zimmerman back at No. 3, Riggleman believes Werth can make the biggest impact hitting second. Over the last three years, Werth has a .373 OBP there, his second-best of any spot in the lineup.

Left undetermined is who will lead off against left-handers. Bernadina is 7-for-41 with 11 strikeouts against them this season.

“It’s a little bit of an area where we’re still searching,” Riggleman said of the quest for a permanent leadoff solution.

Also, Laynce Nix won’t start today because of a sore right Achilles tendon. He is available to pinch-hit.
