SAN FRANCISCO — When the three-day talent-selecting marathon was over and the 2011 MLB Draft had been completed, the Nationals finished up with 51 new player to potentially add to their farm system.
The Nationals tabbed third baseman Anthony Rendon with their first pick, No. 6 overall, right-hander Alex Meyer with their second, No. 23 overall, outfielder Brian Goodwin with their third, No. 34 overall, and left-hander Matt Purke with their fourth pick, No. 96 overall.
They then added to that haul over the course of the next two days, completing the draft with a slew of pitchers (22 to be exact), including 15 right-handed pitchers and 11 left-handers, two catchers, 12 infielders and 11 outfielders.
The Nationals also went local with four of their picks, selecting Georgetown catcher Erick Fernandez in the 25th round and George Washington University left-hander Bobby Lucas in the 27th round along with Georgia outfielder (and Paul VI Catholic High School in Alexandria, V.A., grad) and Westville High School grad Matt Snyder.
Snyder, who was a DH for Ole Miss, is currently on the mend after getting hit with a pitch in the face while playing summer ball in the Valley League.
They also selected the grandson of former MLB first baseman George Scott, shortstop Deion Williams, in the 16th round and the son of former MLB closer Tom Henke, right-hander Travis Henke, in the 22nd round. Bryan Harper, the brother of Bryce, was the Nationals 30th round pick.
