Pirates-Nationals rained out, Zimmermann will skip turn in rotation

Today’s Nationals-Pirates game has been cancelled because of rain.

No makeup date was announced for the game, which was scheduled to start at 1:05 p.m.

The Nationals’ clubhouse was closed and manager Jim Riggleman’s daily press conference was cancelled.

According to a Nationals spokesman, the Nationals will use the rainout as an opportunity to shuffle their pitching rotation as they begin a stretch of eight games in New York, Baltimore and Milwaukee. Today’s scheduled starter, Jordan Zimmermann, will be skipped this time through the rotation and will make his next start Sunday, May 22, in Baltimore.

There is no injury to report with Zimmermann, who is less than two years removed from Tommy John surgery, but the Nationals have said all along they’d try to limit his innings and this provides them an avenue to do so without much consequence.

The rest of the pitching lines up as such:

Wednesday at N.Y. Mets: Tom Gorzelanny vs. Dillon Gee

Thursday at N.Y. Mets: Livan Hernandez vs. R.A. Dickey

Friday at Baltimore Orioles: Jason Marquis vs. Jake Arrieta

Saturday at Baltimore Orioles: John Lannan vs. Chris Tillman

Sunday at Baltimore Orioles: Jordan Zimmermann vs. Zach Britton
