Werth cleans up, Nix third: today's lineup

NEW YORK — Perhaps in an effort to ignite his offense any way he can, Nationals manager Jim Riggleman has put together a completely new lineup for the Nationals 1:10 p.m. game with the Mets today.

Jayson Werth will hit cleanup for the first time this season — and just the eighth start in that spot in his career. In seven previous starts (nine previous games) as the cleanup hitter, Werth is 7-for-29 (.241) with a .313 on-base percentage and .517 slugging percentage. He’s hit two homers, driven in three runs and walked three times.

With regard to the move, Riggleman said: “Basically if you line your left-handers up together it makes it a little easier for the opposing team to stifle you as you get in the late innings. That’s a primary reason, but also we’re just trying to find some combination there where we can produce more runs.”

Laynce Nix, who gets the start in left field against right-hander Dillon Gee, will bat third, in Werth’s usual spot with Ryan Zimmerman out of the lineup and Adam LaRoche will hit fifth.

Here are the full lineups:

Roger Bernadina CF
Ian Desmond SS
Laynce Nix LF
Jayson Werth RF
Adam LaRoche 1B
Danny Espinosa 2B

Alex Cora 3B
Livan Hernandez P
