Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman is expected to take a significant step in his return from abdominal surgery when he plays several innings in an extended spring training game Wednesday..

Zimmerman, who’s been in Florida for about 10 days doing conditioning and working up to batting practice and, eventually, game action, had been experiencing some discomfort when throwing but Riggleman said today that he believes that had been improving.

The Nationals have said that Zimmerman’s rehab from surgery to repair a tear in the rectus muscle of his abdomen would be six weeks, putting him on target to return on June 14 — two weeks from tonight. Everything could be thrown off if there are any setbacks, but if he’s playing in games in Florida a rehab stint may not be far off.
