MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Nationals officially added Roger Bernadina to the 25-man roster this afternoon, calling him back up from Triple-A Syracuse to take the place of injured center fielder Rick Ankiel, who went on the disabled list Friday night with a right wrist sprain, retroactive to May 3.

Bernadina was in the lineup Saturday night hitting leadoff and playing center field.

Bernadina was 2-for-3 in his abbreviated stint with the team last month when shortstop Ian Desmond was on paternity leave and has been hitting .270 with a .352 on-base percentage with Triple-A this season.

It will be interesting to see how things play out for the Nationals and particularly Bernadina in the coming days. The Nationals offense is desperately in need of a spark. If Bernadina can serve that purpose, and perhaps at the top of the lineup, the Nationals could be faced with a decision when Ankiel is ready to return from the disabled list.

While most indications have been that the Nationals would prefer Bernadina as a corner out fielder, he has the speed to play center. Rick Ankiel’s defense is impeccable and his arm is arguably the best in the major leagues but offensively his .221 batting average and .302 on-base percentage in the No. 2 spot in the lineup isn’t screaming irreplaceable.
