Harrisburg outfielder Archie Gilbert was arrested Thursday morning for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and endangering nine construction workers.
The Senators celebrated deep into the night on Wednesday after clinching a playoff berth with a 2-1 victory and needing just one win to clinch the Western Division title in the Eastern League. A celebration that reportedly included beer and champagne for the team’s over-21 players.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, via The Patriot-News, Gilbert drove through a closed construction area on Route 581 east, near Routes 11 and 15 in Lower Allen Township. He is said to have entered the closed-off stretch of highway around 2 a.m. and nearly struck several workers.
He reportedly refused a breath test and posted $500 bail. According to the report, he is charged with a DUI, nine counts of recklessly endangering another person and traffic offenses. A preliminary hearing has been set for Sept. 12 at 9:15 a.m.
Calls to Nationals officials were not immediately returned but the organization released this statement this afternoon:
“The Washington Nationals are aware of the arrest of Harrisburg Senators outfielder Archie Gilbert earlier this morning. We have since talked to Gilbert, but will have no further comment due to the pending legal process at hand.”
Gilbert is hitting .313 for the Senators this season with 12 homers, 40 RBI, a .382 on-base percentage and a .484 slugging percentage. At age 28, Gilbert is one of the oldest players on the Senators and is not considered a top prospect.
