In order to clear space for outfielder Rick Ankiel, who will be activated from the disabled list Saturday afternoon, the Nationals’ designated outfielder Brett Carroll for assignment.

Carroll, who had just two at-bats in the Nationals’ first eight games, was used primarily as a pinch runner during his abbreviated stay. While he was one of the team’s most-used outfielders during spring training, the addition of Xavier Nady, a fellow right-handed outfielder, late in the spring decreased the possible playing time for Carroll on the 25-man roster.

Carroll has 10 days to clear waivers, be claimed or traded, or report to assignment.

Ankiel (quad) will be making his debut this season after missing a large portion of the spring, as well as the Nationals’ first eight games, with a lingering issue. He will become the Nationals primary every day center fielder.
