The Washington Nationals promoted slugging prospect Tyler Moore to the major leagues Sunday morning, placing veteran Mark DeRosa on the disabled list, retroactive to April 28, with a left oblique strain.
Moore, a first baseman who has just begun learning left field, has been the Nationals’ hottest-hitting prospect early this season. In 22 Triple-A games, Moore has hit .286 with seven homers and three doubles. Moore has evolved into one of the Nationals’ best hitting prospects over the past two years, earning their Minor League Player of the Year honors in 2010 and finishing his 2010 and 2011 seasons with 31 home runs in each.
DeRosa is off to a tough start this season, 3-for-37 at the plate in the Nationals’ first 21 games. It is unclear at this time what DeRosa’s injury is. More to come later.
