SAN FRANCISCO — Jayson Werth was scratched from the Nationals’ lineup Monday night less than an hour before the first pitch of the team’s opener against the San Francisco Giants. Werth was scratched with right ankle soreness, according to a Nationals spokesman.
While the soreness is not believed to be anything too serious, this is the fourth game that Werth has not started since returning from the disabled list on Aug. 2.
Werth missed 75 games with a broken left wrist and while he’s come back and seemingly not missed a beat at the plate with regard to his wrist, his legs have given him some trouble as he works his way all the way back into playing shape.
The Nationals are 9-0 in games that Werth has started since coming off the disabled list.
With Werth out, the Nationals moved Michael Morse to right field, bumped Danny Espinosa up to sixth in the lineup and slotted Roger Bernadina into left field, batting seventh.
We’ll have more on Werth after the game.
Here is the new lineup:
Steve Lombardozzi 2B
Bryce Harper CF
Ryan Zimmerman 3B
Adam LaRoche 1B
Michael Morse RF
Danny Espinosa SS
Roger Bernadina LF
Kurt Suzuki C
Gio Gonzalez P
