SAN FRANCISCO — Jayson Werth walked into AT&T Park Tuesday afternoon carrying the protective boot the Nationals trainers made him wear home Monday night and told manager Davey Johnson he was feeling well enough to play.

An MRI done on his right ankle Tuesday morning showed nothing serious, as Werth expected, so Johnson slotted the right fielder into the lineup. He was going to see how he got through batting practice before making a final decision but it appears he’s a go for the 7:15 p.m. (pacific) game.

That was good news for the Nationals because Michael Morse was not in the lineup after coming out of Monday night’s game in the fifth inning with inflammation in his right thumb.

“The big guy is down,” Johnson said. “His thumb is down. Probably the cooler weather doesn’t help that.”

Morse said he felt fine and expected to be in the lineup on Wednesday for the team’s finale against the San Francisco Giants but Johnson made it seem as if a return Friday was more likely.

“I’m fine,” Morse said, offering a thumbs up for effect. “They just don’t want me to play today. I’ll play tomorrow.”

“I don’t know that thumb can heal that fast,” Johnson said. “Hopefully he’ll be able available Friday. But we’ll see. I don’t know what they’ll do to treat it. If he can go tomorrow, I’ll be happy to have him.”
