Nationals-Phillies: Desmond scratched with sore right knee

PHILADELPHIA — Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond was originally in tonight’s lineup for the first game of this three-game set against the Phillies, but roughly 45 minutes before gametime Desmond was scratched with a sore right knee.

Desmond, who stumbled on his way down the first baseline while trying to beat out a double play on Wednesday night, said he might’ve hyperextended his knee and he was trying to jump off it before he felt any further pain.

Friday afternoon in the clubhouse, though, Desmond said he was feeling better and was relieved that nothing major came of the freak incident. He took batting practice on the field at Citizens Bank Park but was scratched shortly thereafter.

With Desmond out, Nationals manager Davey Johnson slotted Steve Lombardozzi in at second base and moved Danny Espinosa back to short, as they’d done during Desmond’s stay on the disabled list with a strained left oblique. Lombardozzi has been one of the Nationals’ hottest hitters but has not started a game since they returned from their previous road trip on Aug. 17.

More information on Desmond as it’s available.
