PHILADELPHIA — As expected, neither Michael Morse or Ian Desmond are in the Nationals’ lineup for the second game of this three-game set with the Phillies.

Morse, who was hit on the right hand with a pitch on Friday night, was still dealing with some swelling in his hand on Saturday and had trouble gripping a bat but the Nationals do not expect him to miss much more than a few games. Nationals manager Davey Johnson said Morse “probably” wouldn’t play for the rest of the series in Philly but that it would be at the outfielder’s discretion.

“Michael’s still a little under the weather,” Johnson said. “It’s going to be up to Michael (when he can play again). He got hit pretty good so just play it day by day.”

Morse did not take batting practice on Saturday.

As for Desmond, he said his mild right hamstring strain was feeling a bit better but, like Morse, Johnson was going to err on the side of caution and it’s extremely likely he too does not play until the Nationals take on the Marlins on Tuesday in Miami.
