  • Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos' friend Vicky Cabrera thriving after heart surgery

Many of you might remember a story that ran in our paper last May on Victoria Cabrera, a 13-year-old little girl from Venezuela who was a family friend of Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos. Vicky, as her friends call her, was struggling with a congenital heart defect and the cost of surgery to fix the problem was becoming prohibitive. Here's an update on her and her family. • Anthony Rendon, Lucas Giolito headline Baseball America's Top 10 Nationals' prospects list

Baseball America released its 2012 Top 10 prospects list for the Washington Nationals on Wednesday morning, and for the first time since 2009, neither Bryce Harper nor Stephen Strasburg finds his name residing at its top. That's just fine with the organization, and Nationals fans, who watched both players help the team to 98 wins this past season. Published December 19 2012

  • How the Nationals shaped the Adam LaRoche market

There is one thing both the Nationals and Adam LaRoche can point to as to why the market for LaRoche has been slow to develop and, thus, his desire for more than the Nationals are offering is still apparently somewhat unfulfilled: draft pick compensation. Published December 18 2012

  • Dan Haren discusses one-year deal with Nationals

The Washington Nationals agreed to terms with right-hander Dan Haren on Tuesday on a one-year, $13 million deal, but it was contingent upon the 32-year-old passing a physical. That was completed on Friday and Haren took some time to discuss his one-year deal with the Nationals. Published December 7 2012

  • MLB Winter Meetings: Nationals will continue search for starting pitching depth

The Washington Nationals are hoping that by Thursday evening they will have their newest starting pitcher officially in the fold. Dan Haren, who agreed to a one-year, $13 million deal with the team on Tuesday, is expected to have his physical wrapped up soon -- and the Nationals' hope, of course, is that he passes. So if and when that does go final, the Nationals will have their starting five essentially locked up. And while they'll be thrilled about that, with what should be one of the best rotations in the league yet again, it actually makes their search for starting pitching depth more difficult. • MLB Winter Meetings: Nationals leave meetings still optimistic about deal with Adam LaRoche

Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo departed the winter meetings on Wednesday with owner Mark Lerner and manager Davey Johnson. But the rest of the contingent left Thursday afternoon and they did so with what seemed to be overriding optimism that they will workout a deal with free agent first baseman Adam LaRoche. The Nationals have made their two-year offer to LaRoche and they appear unwilling to budge off it, leaving the ball in his court. Published December 6 2012

  • MLB Winter Meetings: Nationals lose four players in Rule 5 draft

The Washington Nationals didn't make any selections in Thursday's Rule 5 Draft but they lost four players, including two in the major league portion of the draft, to other teams. Kobernus was then traded by the Red Sox to the Detroit Tigers. • MLB Winter Meetings: Nationals make their exit, remain optimistic on Adam LaRoche

The winter meetings don't "officially" end until mid-morning on Thursday, following the Rule 5 draft. But most of the Nationals, having accomplished almost all of their main offseason goals already, have made their exit from the Gaylord Opryland Hotel. Nationals owner Mark Lerner, general manager Mike Rizzo and manager Davey Johnson all left Nashville on Wednesday afternoon, returning to D.C. with very little left on their to-do list and just in time to greet Dan Haren as he arrives for his physical. • Nationals participate in Stand Up To Cancer auction

Before the rumor mill gets cranking on Day 3 of the Winter Meetings, I wanted to make sure one of the initiatives announced by Major League Baseball this week didn't go overlooked. • MLB Winter Meetings: Picked up pieces from Day 2 in Nashville

Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson held his press conference with reporters at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel Tuesday afternoon, and the gregarious manager was in fine form discussing his team and where he sees them going in 2013. Johnson, who goes about his business on a daily basis with a fairly cocksure nature, didn't shy away from letting everyone know what he thinks about the talent assembled for the 2013 Nationals. Here are a few other notes and rumblings from the day. Published December 4 2012
