Jayson Werth misses Tuesday's workout with back spasms

VIERA, Fla. — Jayson Werth wasn’t present for the Nationals’ workout Tuesday morning. The outfielder was dealing with back spasms so he was excused from the day’s events but Nationals manager Davey Johnson didn’t seem to think the spasms were a huge cause for concern.

Werth was most likely not slated to play in the Nationals’ first two spring games anyway as the Nationals open with a game against Georgetown University on Friday and then travel to Kissimmee on Saturday to play the Houston Astros in the Grapefruit League opener.

Johnson didn’t think Werth would be in danger of missing a huge number of games but added “It’s not something I’m taking any chances with.”

Werth spent the offseason working out at Nationals Park with Steve Lombardozzi and Ryan Zimmerman and the Nationals have no concerns over his physical shape. It sounds like anything they hold him back from will be purely precautionary.
