Jayson Werth misses second straight Nationals workout

VIERA, Fla. — Jayson Werth was not present on the field at Space Coast Stadium Wednesday morning as the Nationals began their second straight workout without him. Werth, who missed Tuesday’s workout with back spasms, didn’t offer much in the way of an update on his condition this morning. Asked how he was feeling he stopped long enough to say “I don’t care,” but then kept walking.

The Nationals do not appear concerned about the issue but Nationals manager Davey Johnson said Tuesday that the team wouldn’t take any chances with him.

The Nationals will open their Grapefruit League schedule on Saturday in Kissimmee against the Houston Astros but it wasn’t likely that Werth would have traveled to that game anyway. The team opens their home slate on Sunday against Houston and they’ll be working out inside Space Coast Stadium until then, Johnson said, so they can get accustomed to the confines.
