BOSTON — In the 37 games since Bryce Harper has been called up to the major leagues, he has played all but a half-inning. But Sunday afternoon, as the Nationals look for a series sweep against the Red Sox and lefty Jon Lester, he will not start.

Harper is out of the Nationals lineup for the first time, a move that comes just days after manager Davey Johnson mentioned the 19-year-old had been nursing a tender back. How much that came into play for the day off is questionable. Harper insists his back is no issue, no worse than any ailment any of the rest of his teammates deal with on a daily basis, and (as noted) he’s played all 37 games since his call-up.
