TORONTO — The Nationals announced the signings of 23 of their 40 selections from the 2012 MLB Draft. The announcement, which included the previously reported agreements with second-round pick Tony Renda, as well as fourth-round pick Brandon Miller, left just four of the Nationals’ top-10 selections unsigned with one month to go before the July 13 deadline.
Third-round pick Brett Mooneyham had been pitching for Stanford and thus was not allowed to begin negotiations with the Nationals, but Stanford was recently eliminated from the playoffs so those talks can now commence. Seventh-round selection Robert Benincasa and his Florida State team are still in but eighth-rounder Stephen Perez, out of the University of Miami, has also just wrapped up his season.
Update: Perez tweeted Tuesday night that he was “Officially a Washington National,” so the Nationals can likely cross that one off their list, too.
The Nationals top pick, high school right-hander Lucas Giolito, is committed to UCLA for the fall but the Nationals have been saving on their $4.4 million allotment elsewhere in the top 10 rounds and will likely have more than the slotted $2.125 million to offer Giolito. Still, officials expect the signing will take more time than some of the rest.
