CINCINNATI — One day after giving himself a welt the size of a golf ball above his left eye, and opening a gash that required 10 stitches when he slammed his bat into the dugout wall and had it carom back into his head, Bryce Harper was in the Nationals’ lineup.

Manager Davey Johnson said Friday night it was “more than likely” that Harper would be down a few days, anticipating more swelling above the outfielder’s eye, but Harper said doctors had cleared him to play.

Johnson obviously was convinced because Harper is in the Nationals’ lineup, batting fifth and playing right field for the 13th straight game since his call-up on April 28. So the kid, who shortstop Ian Desmond dubbed “Bam Bam” after his incident Friday night, gets a chance to redeem himself after an 0-for-5 game with three strikeouts.

The Nationals will send Jordan Zimmermann to the mound against Reds righty and Alexandria, VA native Mat Latos.
