MIAMI — Most in the Nationals’ clubhouse Monday morning were a little bleary-eyed but no worse for the wear after playing an 8 p.m. game in Atlanta Sunday night, traveling to Miami and reporting for Monday’s game before 10 a.m.

“I feel like I flew from Beijing to Miami,” said Nationals manager Davey Johnson. “But the guys look good, and that’s all that matters. It was kind of a short night.”

No, the schedule was not kind to the Nationals this Memorial Day, the perils of being the best team in the National League East, I suppose. But they were able to send starter Jordan Zimmermann to Miami a day early and have their regular lineup in against Carlos Zambrano and the Marlins — save for catcher Jesus Flores, who is resting a sore hamstring.

In his place will be Carlos Maldonado, who has played 1,184 minor league games over 17 minor league seasons and is making his 19th career major league start.
