Nationals-Cubs lineups: Jayson Werth gets planned day off

Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson was late for his post-game press conference Tuesday night. He was having a meeting with outfielder Jayson Werth, who was doing his best to dissuade Johnson from giving him a planned day off on Wednesday.

It was to no avail.

“That was good,” Johnson said. “But he’s off.”

Werth was indeed not in the Nationals’ lineup on Wednesday for the third game of this four-game set against the Chicago Cubs. And the deeper the Nationals get into the season, the closer they get to ensuring themselves a playoff spot, the more Johnson may pick his spots to give his main guys a day or two.

He’s already had enough trouble trying to get guys like Tyler Moore and Steve Lombardozzi in the lineup with his entire team healthy. Wednesday, Werth, who is 3-for-33 against Cubs starter Chris Volstad in his career, was spelled by Roger Bernadina.

Here are the full lineups:

Roger Bernadina CF
Bryce Harper RF
Ryan Zimmerman 3B
Adam LaRoche 1B
Michael Morse LF
Ian Desmond SS
Danny Espinosa 2B
Kurt Suzuki C
Gio Gonzalez P

Joe Mather CF
Dave Sappelt RF
Anthony Rizzo 1B
Alfonso Soriano LF
Starlin Castro SS
Welington Castillo C
Josh Vitters 3B
Darwin Barney 2B
Chris Volstad P
