ATLANTA — Jayson Werth tried to talk his way into the Nationals’ lineup on Tuesday afternoon, but manager Davey Johnson informed him it wasn’t going to happen, so the right fielder set his sights on Wednesday’s game.

Werth, who fouled a ball off his left ankle in the eighth inning of Monday night’s game and was also dealing with some cramping in his right hamstring, did a little walking and running on Tuesday to test his legs and hopes he’ll be good to go for Wednesday.

“I’m pretty sore but I don’t think it’ll be a big deal,” Werth said.

The ankle, which Werth said was more of the issue than the cramping in his hamstring, was wrapped tightly when Werth tested it on Tuesday. The right fielder said he did not go for X-rays but if there isn’t any improvement it’s the likely next step, though he appeared unconcerned he may have broken something.

“Jayson came in to me and said it feels better today, but I said I can’t take that chance,” said manager Davey Johnson. “Let’s hope it’s nothing serious, and after today he’ll be fine. But obviously it was cramping or it was spasming or something. He knows he also hits (Braves starter Tim Hudson) very well, so he didn’t want to miss his chance. But I’d rather him miss this game than miss a week or something, two weeks.”

Tyler Moore got the start in left field and Bryce Harper moved over to right field in Werth’s absence.

– One other note: Bullpen coach Jim Lett said he was OK after taking a line drive off the bat of Adam LaRoche off the right side of his head during early batting practice. Lett, who just didn’t get behind the ‘L’ screen quickly enough while throwing to LaRoche, said he was checked for a concussion and given the green light by the Nationals trainers.
