Nationals - Cubs lineups: Denard Span, Adam LaRoche sit vs. left-handed Chris Rusin

CHICAGO — Denard Span and Adam LaRoche were out of the Washington Nationals’ lineup on Tuesday, sitting as the team faced Chicago Cubs left-hander Chris Rusin. Tyler Moore was in the lineup at first base and Scott Hairston was slotted into left field, with Bryce Harper moving to center.

Over the weekend, manager Davey Johnson admitted he’d begin sitting his left-handed batters more often against left-handed pitchers at this point in the season. While neither Span nor LaRoche has ever been a platoon player in the past, their numbers against lefties this season are so far below their norms, Johnson now has a large enough body of work to justify sitting them.

Moore, back up in the majors after crushing Triple-A Pitching for the past six weeks, needs regular playing time and Johnson said he’d try harder to ensure this time around that the 26-year-old gets it. Sitting LaRoche against left-handers is one way to do that.

Here are the full lineups as the Nationals look to recover from a 10-run blowout on Monday night:
