CHICAGO — The tarp is on the field here at Wrigley with the Nationals and Cubs set to get the finale of this four-game series underway in just about three hours so here’s hoping the rain will pass before game time.

When they do take the field, the Nationals will be without shortstop Ian Desmond, first baseman Adam LaRoche and center fielder Denard Span. LaRoche and Span are sitting against the left-handed Travis Wood with Tyler Moore playing first, Scott Hairston playing left and Bryce Harper moving over to center field.

But Desmond is likely out to rest his back, which locked up on him during batting practice on Wednesday. Desmond did play in Wednesday’s game, starting it as usual, but he was removed on a double switch in the fifth inning. He said he’d be fine, though, so perhaps manager Davey Johnson is just giving him a day off as a precaution and to rest.

Desmond has played more games than any other Nationals player this season.
