Stephen Strasburg to start Nationals' Grapefruit League opener

VIERA, Fla. — The Nationals have the top of their Grapefruit League rotation set with Stephen Strasburg slated to pitch in the opener on Saturday, Feb. 23 against the New York Mets.

Strasburg will make the trip to Port St. Lucie to face the Mets in the afternoon game, while Jordan Zimmermann will pitch the home opener a day later against the Miami Marlins. Gio Gonzalez will start the third game, on Monday back in Port St. Lucie. 

Gonzalez is lined up to pitch on Feb. 25, March 2 and March 7 before he leaves to join Team USA should they advance to the second round of the World Baseball Classic. His first start for them would be on March 12.

Johnson did not say which order Ross Detwiler and Dan Haren would go in the fourth and fifth games of the spring season.
