Strasburg, Harper, Desmond, Span headline travel roster for Grapefruit League opener

VIERA, Fla. — The Washington Nationals will open their 2013 Grapefruit League schedule on Saturday, Feb. 23, with a 12:10 p.m. game down the east coast of Florida in Port St. Lucie against the New York Mets.

Stephen Strasburg has known he’d be pitching in this game for about a week, with manager Davey Johnson setting the spring rotation a bit earlier than he posted the travel roster for Saturday’s game. Jordan Zimmermann will start the home opener on Sunday, but Strasburg will be joined by Craig Stammen, Cole Kimball, Fernando Abad, Bill Bray, Erik Davis and Pat McCoy on the trip.

Shortstop Ian Desmond and outfielders Bryce Harper and Denard Span are the three regulars making the trip with Steve Lombardozzi, Tyler Moore, Chad Tracy rounding out the travelers who spent most of 2012 on the big league roster.
