Team USA’s provisional roster for the World Baseball Classic was announced Thursday morning and there wasn’t a single Nationals player listed.
The rosters for the other participating countries will be announced later Thursday afternoon and at least one Nationals player, Roger Bernadina, is expected to play for his country (Netherlands). But as for Team USA, it will be devoid of Nationals players.
According to a release from Major League Baseball, provisional rosters allow up to 28 players to be listed, creating a pool of players who are eligible to be named to the final roster. Final 28-man rosters must be submitted by Feb. 20 and contain 13 pitchers and two catchers.
While there were likely several Nationals players who were asked, the fact that there are none on the team means that Davey Johnson will be able to keep most of his team together throughout spring training and not lose many players to the March tournament.
