When Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson set about putting his lineup together for Thursday’s 12:35 p.m. matinee finale against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Bryce Harper was back in it after a one-day absence, but Ian Desmond was still missing.

Desmond, who is dealing with a large blister on the outside palm of his left hand, was supposed to get a special pad to cover the blister, Johnson said, but it had not yet made it to the ballpark.

“He was going to get a magic patch today that was going to miraculously heal it,” Johnson said. “But the pharmacy didn’t come through. So, to be continued.”

Perhaps the patch came in, though, because about an hour before game time the Nationals announced a lineup switch. Desmond returned to the Nationals’ lineup, playing shortstop and hitting sixth as the Nationals looked to break a six-game losing streak that has followed them since the All-Star break.

They’ll send Gio Gonzalez to the mound against Pirates veteran righty A.J. Burnett.
