Jordan Zimmermann has been battling a lingering kink in his neck for at least the last seven weeks. Now, just as the Washington Nationals' right-hander is receiving the accolades and attention that comes with establishing himself as one of the best pitchers in the game, Zimmermann may have to skip the All-Star Game in hopes of finally getting past the issue. • Davey Johnson getting comfortable with new-look lineup

It's been a week since Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson wrote out his lineup with a slight twist, putting shortstop Ian Desmond in the No. 2 spot and dropping right fielder Jayson Werth into the six-hole. When he first did it, Johnson said his reasoning was simple: "Because I'm supposed to do something." Published July 11 2013

  • Nationals tag Cliff Lee for four homers in Gio Gonzalez's latest gem

Cliff Lee entered Wednesday night's game against the Washington Nationals averaging less than one home run per nine innings in his career. • Taylor Jordan concerned about possibly tipping his pitches

The Washington Nationals have had nothing but good things to say about right-hander Taylor Jordan since he joined their rotation June 29. They're impressed with his poise on the mound, particularly when they have not played well behind him, impressed with his deceptive motion and impressed by his arsenal of pitches. But if there is one aspect in which Jordan has struggled in his first three major league starts, it's that hitters have a bit better success off him on his second and third time through a batting order. As Jayson Werth strode to the plate in the eighth inning Tuesday night, Cole Hamels had his back against the ropes. The bases were loaded. There were two outs. Everyone in the ballpark knew that the game hung in the balance of one swing. The fact that it’d have to come off Werth’s bat made for even better theater as the count ran full. • Scott Hairston hits leadoff as Davey Johnson tries to send a message

When the Washington Nationals acquired Scott Hairston late Sunday night to help bolster their bench, the timing of it was deliberate. His numbers against the Phillies, and particularly Cole Hamels, were also too gaudy to ignore. Published July 9 2013

  • John Lannan outduels Dan Haren as Nationals' comeback falls short in loss to Phillies

Dan Haren strode to the mound for the Washington Nationals’ Monday night hoping that it would serve as the final push of the reset button his 2013 season. What came out in the Nationals’ 3-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, a kind final score that hides the fact that the Nationals were shutout through eight innings by former teammate John Lannan, was mixed results and not a whole lot of conclusions. After thinking it over for a few days, Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper accepted an invitation from New York Mets third baseman David Wright to participate in the 2013 Home Run Derby. Published July 8 2013

  • Why the Nationals traded for Scott Hairston

Scott Hairston's flight out of Chicago was delayed on Monday afternoon, so the Washington Nationals' newest acquisition was not around prior to their game against the Philadelphia Phillies. But the team was hopeful he'd arrive shortly before game time. Waiting a few more hours was fine with them. Hairston's addition was the product of a few weeks of discussions between the Nationals and the Cubs, culminating with their agreement late Sunday night. Published July 8 2013

  • On Ryan Zimmerman and aggressiveness at the plate

As Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson unpacked Sunday afternoon's 11-7 victory over the San Diego Padres, he talked glowingly about the at-bats he was starting to see from his team.
